We've all heard of recycling, but are you familiar with upcycling? According to Wikipedia, upcycling is defined as, "the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value." Reuse is, after all, better than recycling. It saves the energy required to recycle the material and it prevents the consumption of a brand new (or even new-recycled) item. Upcycling has really taken off online. There are entire Pinterest boards dedicated to creative upcycling ideas. Companies like 1-800-GOT-JUNK even advocate upcycling with ways to repurpose items you might otherwise send off in one of their trucks. Upcycling is an ideal way to decorate a house which might benefit from a colorful, funky, and eclectic feel. Beach houses, rental cabins, and garage workspaces are perfect places for upcycling to shine. Upcycling of reclaimed materials from old barns and wineries has even been used to inspire design and renovation of luxury homes. You can also teach the concept of upcycling to kids by engaging them in craft projects to turn trash into toys. (Be sure to check out Upcycle Magazine for more ideas.) Also, if you can't think of a way to upcycle something, consider the Salvation Army. Your used goods can have a second life and give someone a second chance!
